How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair can be bothersome wherever it appears. Whether you want to remove hair from your face or anywhere on your body, laser hair removal can provide hair-free skin that lasts. This treatment acts on your hair follicles to stop growth so you can stop thinking about the tedious business of hair removal.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Other methods of hair removal get rid of the hair but do nothing to stop it from coming back. Shaving removes the hair at the skin’s surface, so you see stubble in days. Waxing, threading, or epilating pulls the hair root out of the follicle, but a new one will grow in its place.

Laser hair removal works differently because it uses laser energy to heat the pigments inside the hair root, damaging the follicle itself. As a result, the follicle no longer grows hair, and your skin stays smooth. Since it stops regrowth, laser hair removal provides long-lasting results.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Preparing for laser hair removal is important to achieving your best results. This treatment works by targeting hair roots, so it can only treat follicles that contain a pigmented, intact root. Follow these preparation tips:

Avoid Waxing or Threading

Most hair removal methods other than shaving pull out the hair root. If this happens, the laser cannot treat that follicle. Stop using these hair removal methods several weeks before treatment. You can continue to shave and should shave the day before your session.

Do Not Use Bleach

Pigments in the hair root absorb laser energy during treatment, causing damage to the follicle. Bleached hair is missing its pigment and will not absorb the laser energy. Allow your natural hair color to grow for several weeks before treatment.

Limit Sun Exposure

Laser hair removal is not safe to use on tanned or artificially tanned skin. Avoid sun exposure, use sunscreen, and do not use self-tanning products before treatment. You may not be able to have treatment if you have a tan.

Avoid NSAIDs and Alcohol

NSAIDs (over-the-counter products like aspirin and ibuprofen) can increase the risk of side effects. Your Twin Ports Dermatology provider may recommend that you limit these as well as some supplements. Make sure your provider knows about all the medications you use.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Your hair follicles go through cycles of activity. Depending on the area of the body and your individual pattern of hair growth, anywhere from one-quarter to one-third of your follicles contain growing hairs at any time. Only these follicles are affected by the laser. The others will become active later and be addressed with future treatments.

Most people need six to eight treatments to achieve full hair removal. Results are long-lasting, but most people will eventually see stray hairs regrow. Occasional maintenance treatments can address these hairs, which are usually finer and less visible. How often you need maintenance treatments depends on your natural patterns of hair growth.
