About Twin Ports Dermatology’s “Give Back” Campaign

When Duluth native Anthony Smith and his wife Heather began the process of opening Twin Ports Dermatology in 2015, they had two main goals. The first was to provide the Northland with quality, accessible Dermatology care. The second was to find a way to give back to the community they call home.

Twin Ports Dermatology is excited to announce our “Give Back” campaign. The “Give Back” campaign will allow Twin Ports Dermatology to support the community that supports us. Starting November 2021, a monthly donation will be given to a local or MN/WI-based organization.

Heather and Anthony have incorporated their team of employees to join them in this campaign by helping select charities and organizations near and dear to their hearts to donate to.

“We are elated to be able to give back to our wonderful community and state that has supported us through the years”. ~ Heather and Anthony Smith

How Does the Giveback Program Work?

Each month a new charity or organization from the Northland or MN/WI to receive a donation from Twin Ports Dermatology. Charities are selected by our team. Each month, a different team member is selected to choose who they wish to donate to. It’s important to get our staff involved because they contribute so much to our success.

How to Request a Donation?

Beyond our “Give Back” campaign, we also accept donation requests. We enjoy sponsoring local events with raffle prizes. If you have an upcoming benefit or fundraiser, please email [email protected]. Donation requests should be received at least one (1) month prior to the event.

Twin Port’s Give Back Charity Affiliates

Hi all, I’m Colleen! I’m cis gender and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I’m an RN here at Twin Ports Dermatology so chances are good that we’ve connected over the phone or in person. For TPD’s Give Back Campaign this month, I chose Trans Northland.

Trans Northland, formally Trans Plus is a community group that provides support, advocacy, and education on behalf of our trans community members. Those who would self-identify under the transgender umbrella use labels that they are most comfortable with to define their gender. You may see terms like Transwoman, Transman, Transmasculine, Gender Queer, Non-binary, and Gender Diverse to name a few. This is often a very personal and important part of their identity.

Trans Northland is based in Duluth but supports a wider community throughout the region of Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. We need organizations like this to support our trans community because they are at significantly higher risk for mental health disorders and suicide than the cis gender community. This is in part due to lack of acceptance, understanding, discrimination, and violence. Creating a safe space for trans folks is often found in the details, such as correct pronoun use and direct language rather than making assumptions about someone’s identity.

I’ve been an ally for many years to friends and people in the LGBTQ community and it’s important to me to help effect positive change. I’ve been especially motivated as I’ve witnessed or been part of the sometimes-unique healthcare needs of people within the community and the associated challenges these needs may pose. I chose Trans Northland because when you become an ally to transgender people, our actions can help change the culture and make society a better and safer place for all people transgender or not!

Thank you, Twin Ports Dermatology, for making this contribution on my behalf!
  • Sun Safety Education

Sun Safety Education is so important! This May, our Twin Ports Dermatology team (Kayla Olds, Jenna Meyer, and Michelle Savage) volunteered to teach children across the Northland how to protect their skin from the sun.

Thank you to Assumption Catholic School, Hartley Nature Center, and Hermantown/Proctor Early Learning for giving us the opportunity to give back! We enjoyed it so much and think the kiddos did too!

  • Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network (DSDN)

For TPD’s Give Back Campaign this month, I chose the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network (DSDN).

DSDN is the largest national organization supporting new and expectant parents with a Down syndrome diagnosis. Their mission is to connect, support and provide accurate information and education to parents and medical professionals.

Organizations like DSDN provide support to families in various ways like pregnancy care packages, access to resources in raising a child with Down syndrome, scholarships and adoption grants. DSDN provides opportunities for families to connect through different events. They also work with OB/GYNs and medical providers on how to deliver unexpected diagnoses by providing resources that are supportive and educational.

I chose this organization because I have a niece who has Down syndrome. A similar organization to DSDN has been huge in offering support to my brother and his family ever since they received Emily’s diagnosis prior to being born. Every September, our family walks with Emily at a “fun” raising walk to support and raise awareness.

Emily is almost 11 years old and doing amazing! She is so kind, silly and loving. She loves all kinds of sports and plays basketball, tennis, golf, swimming and hockey. She is her older brother’s (and his team) biggest fan when it comes hockey and has even been nicknamed “Emily (Herb) Brooks”. Emily is Rockin’ that extra chromosome and I am a proud Rockin’ auntie!

To everyone touched by breast cancer, know Twin Ports Dermatology is with you in your fight.

That is why 10% of our Optimal Skin care line proceeds are being donated to the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation for the entire month of October. We join together in our mission to help alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with breast cancer treatment in our community.

When you invest in your skin health, you also actively invest in helping those in need. Together we strive towards our healthiest selves!
  • Animal Allies

“I have had a dog my whole life. My parents always had dogs when I was growing up, and I have had a dog most of my adult life as well. I chose animal allies because I wish ALL animals had a loving home. They love you unconditionally, and they deserve the same. It breaks my heart and makes me angry to see neglected and abandoned animals. Thank you, Twin Ports Dermatology, for donating to this cause on my behalf.”

-Laurie Patnode-Childs

This month, Dr. Samuelson chose Life House Duluth for our Give Back Campaign because he would like all kids to be able to fulfill their potential no matter where they come from.
