Atypical Mole Removal

What is Atypical Mole Removal?

Asset 1

Atypical mole removal is a preventative surgery for patients in which abnormal lesions that have the potential to develop cancerous cells are removed. Atypical mole removal is a recommended surgical solution so patients who don’t have to worry about their atypical mole progressing to cancer.

Atypical mole removal is called a surgical excision. Your dermatology provider will use a surgical scalpel to remove the mole and get clear margins and then close the wound with stitches. Before this is done, your dermatology provider will examine the mole and perform a biopsy to determine if it’s atypical. If it’s determined to contain atypical cells, your dermatology provider will then remove surrounding skin tissue.

Twin Ports Dermatology offers diagnosis and treatment for patients who want to ensure their moles are normal.

Candidates for Atypical Mole Removal

The best candidates for atypical mole removal are individuals who have a biopsy proving that their moles have abnormal cells.

How Does It Work?

Atypical mole removal can be performed in less than 60 minutes. During the procedure, your dermatologist will numb the mole and use a scalpel to remove the entire mole. The mole is then sent to a Dermatopathologist to confirm clear margins.
