Aging is an Unavoidable Part of Life, How Botox Can Help

By Maria Becker, Rn Injection Specialist

that most people try to prevent with exercise, diet, sun protection and hydration. Adding Botox to this equation is also becoming “the norm” in preventing premature aging. In recent years, more people are asking when the right time is to get Botox rather than “if” they should get it.

Botox corrects and prevents the visible signs of facial aging by relaxing overactive facial muscles and decreasing movement that causes wrinkles. The goal with using Botox is to soften lines and brighten the overall skin tone. It should not change your appearance in a dramatic way or give you a frozen appearance.

Most women and men do not have wrinkles in their early 20’s but around the mid-twenties superficial fine lines start to appear. Often, there is a genetic predisposition to aging in certain areas of the face. It can be helpful to look at how older family members are aging and then assess your own fine lines that are starting to appear. No matter the age, Botox injections consistently erase fine lines and retrains muscles in a way that prevents facial over-expression. On average, many patients in their 20’s respond well to 1-3 preventative Botox treatments per year.

During this decade vertical lines form between the brows, creases begin across the forehead, and fine lines creep-in around the eyes. In the mid to late 30’s, you might find that makeup tends to build-up and settle into deeper creases. Botox will help make the skin taut and smooth which minimizes the depth of those creases. Chemical peels are a complementary treatment to Botox that helps smooth the skin’s surface. At this age, Botox continues to be a prophylactic wrinkle treatment and minimizes deeper creases. On average treatments are recommended every 3-6 months.

BOTOX IN YOUR 40’s & Beyond

Due to age-related loss of volume and thinning of the skin, wrinkles are more prominent and visible in our 40’s. Sagging skin may also become a concern.

If Botox has not previously been used, the facial muscles have had many years of repetitive contractions and ample time to bulk up. Botox will help to smooth facial skin, but further treatments such as micro needling or chemical peels may be needed to address texture issues. Botox in the 4th decade prevents existing wrinkles from growing deeper into the skin and can be used to lift some areas where the skin is beginning to sag.

How We Can Help You

While wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, they can be distressing for many and often lead to lower self-confidence. The right time to begin using Botox depends on an individual’s skin, genetics, priorities and lifestyle. The information above is just a generalized guideline to follow.
