How Long Does Microneedling Last?

Many factors contribute to skin that looks rough, uneven or shows signs of aging. Fortunately, microneedling effectively addresses a wide range of skin issues, including textural and pigmentation problems, to provide smooth skin with a healthy glow. This treatment uses your body’s healing responses to promote cellular renewal and collagen production.

What is Microneedling?

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a treatment used to improve skin tone and texture by triggering your skin’s repair mechanisms. Microneedling at Twin Ports Dermatology is performed with SkinPen, a precision handheld device that gives your aesthetician maximum control and lets them target problem areas more efficiently.

How Does Microneedling Work?

The tiny microchannels created by this treatment reach into the dermis, the deeper layers of your skin where collagen production occurs. These channels trigger the surrounding cells to release a wave of healing and growth factors that increase cell turnover. They also signal cells called fibroblasts to increase their collagen formation, resulting in increased firmness and resilience. Microneedling is one of the most effective ways to stimulate a dramatic increase in your skin’s collagen levels.

How Long Does Microneedling Last?

We find that most people benefit from a series of three microneedling treatments to achieve their desired results, although people with significant textual concerns may benefit from additional sessions. Your results may become visible within a few weeks but will take about three months to develop fully.

Microneedling results last a year or more for most people. We recommend annual maintenance sessions to keep your skin smooth and glowing. Each person’s collagen production is different so some people may see their results last longer than others. We will work with you to determine the best schedule to maintain your skin at its best.

Is There Any Downtime After Microneedling?

When you leave your microneedling session, your skin will usually look red and feel sensitive. This can last for up to a few days. While no downtime is required, you should avoid any harsh, irritating, or strongly scented products for several days after treatment.

Your skin can receive extra benefits from skincare products after microneedling. Your Twin Ports Dermatology team can recommend the best products for your concerns and goals, including our Soothing Clarifying Serum or Hyaluronic Serum. These gentle serums are safe for your sensitive skin while they calm and boost hydration. We also offer kits tailored to your needs that can maintain your skin between treatments.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling uses no laser energy, making it safe for all skin types and tones. Good candidates for this treatment want to improve their skin’s overall firmness, texture, and brightness. Candidates should have reasonable expectations and no major health problems. You should not have microneedling if you have certain medical conditions.
