When you think of hair loss, do you think of balding men with receding hairlines? In men, this is a sign of androgenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss. In women, it often appears as an overall thinning and more visible scalp along parted hair. During hair loss, men and women typically see hair follicles become inactive, either across the scalp or in certain areas we associate with male-pattern baldness. Changes to the scalp can also make it more difficult for follicles to produce healthy hairs, leading to breakage. PRP hair treatment uses platelet-rich plasma extracted from a sample of your blood to restore healthy hair growth.

The first step in your PRP treatment is the collection of a small amount of blood. Spinning blood in a centrifuge separates it into layers. The PRP is a clear yellow layer (the plasma) filled with platelets, components of your immune system that produce healing and growth factors. When injected, PRP triggers more blood flow to the scalp, activates dormant hair follicles, and stimulates new hair growth.
Because PRP hair treatment injects your own platelets into your scalp, the risk of a reaction is almost nonexistent, and most people can return to all their usual activities immediately. The injection areas may feel slightly sensitive or swollen for up to a day or two. However, you can wash your hair and otherwise return to your daily routine, including your usual styling products. Most people finish their PRP appointment, restyle their hair a bit, and return to work.

You will notice that this new hair looks and feels thicker, stronger, and healthier. If you already take hair loss medications or supplements, you will find that PRP improves the results of these methods.
Because it uses your own blood, PRP is safe for almost anyone. Most healthy adults are good candidates. However, not all types of hair loss respond to this treatment the same way. You might not be a good candidate for PRP if you have certain bleeding or clotting disorders, other medical conditions, or are pregnant.
