The Differences Between Daxxify®, Botox®, and Dysport®

If you’re looking to reduce early signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, you have probably considered a neurotoxin like Botox®. But which injectable option is right for you? To make that decision, it’s best to schedule a consultation with an expert, but it’s also helpful to understand the differences between them.

What are Botox®, Dyport®, and Daxxify®?

Botox®, Dyport®, and Daxxify® are all injectables that are neurotoxins that use botulinum toxin to reduce the muscle movement that causes wrinkles. The botulinum toxin interrupts the brain’s signals to the injected nerve endings. This results in the skin becoming smooth and relaxed. Due to the relaxing of the facial muscles, the skin may become smoother and look more youthful.

All of these treatments take less than thirty minutes to complete. You can return to most daily activities immediately, but you may see temporary redness or bruising for a day or two in the injected area. There are a few restrictions after the treatment: you cannot exercise for twenty-four hours, lay flat for four hours, or get a massage or facial.

What Makes Botox® Different?

Botox® consists of a protein produced by Clostridium botulinum. Small doses are injected into the skin to treat the muscle that causes wrinkles. Botox® would be best suited for you if you are looking to reduce mild to moderate wrinkles, creases, and fine lines on the forehead area. Botox® is also effective in treating frown lines and crow’s feet.

Botox®’s effect on wrinkle reduction can be seen from a week to a month after the treatment is complete. The results are temporary and last up to three to four months. This treatment is safe and became FDA-approved for cosmetic purposes in April 2002.

What Makes Dyport® Different?

Botox® and Dyport® come from botulinum toxin, but they target different areas of your skin. Dyport® mainly focuses on reducing frown lines, particularly seen between your eyebrows. This neurotoxin stops the muscle from moving in the direction that causes the wrinkle.

Dyport® became an FDA-approved treatment for cosmetics in April 2009. When completing the treatment, wrinkles are usually reduced two to three days after the injection. The results of Dyport® are seen much quicker than those of Botox®. These results generally last up to three to four months, similar to Botox®, but may last longer depending on how it affects your skin.

What Makes Daxxify® Different?

Only Daxxify® uses a small peptide instead of a larger animal-based protein that is in Botox® and Dyport®. The small peptide helps bind Daxxify® to the nerves more effectively. The results of Daxxify® can last up to six months or more, while the other neurotoxins last up to three to four months. Daxxify® works best on the expression lines that are caused by movements of frowning, smiling, or squinting.

The results of reduced wrinkles and the relaxing of expression lines may start to appear often within a day or two. The results may, however, take up to two weeks to have the full effect. Daxxify®’s small peptide formula is more efficient when reaching its destination, so the effects are usually seen sooner than Botox®. Daxxify® has been FDA-approved since September 2022.
