Microneedling is the use of thin, sterilized needles that puncture the skin to trigger the skin’s repair mechanisms and stimulate collagen production. Your body’s collagen production goes into overdrive, helping the skin firm up and accelerating cellular turnover. Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat skin conditions such as stretch marks, and acne scars, and minimizes aging symptoms.
Microneedling may be done at home to benefit your skin. However, at-home microneedling won’t be as effective as getting this treatment done professionally at the Med Spa. There are roller devices that can be used for at-home microneedling. The needles in these devices are much shorter and duller than medical spa procedures.
The at-home rolling devices are not meant to penetrate your skin like the medical spa devices. Microneedling at home stimulates blood flow and can make your skin seem brighter temporarily, but doesn’t deliver the same effectiveness as the Med Spa treatments. The at-home microneedling devices are hard to maintain and keep clean, so you are more prone to infection due to this.

At Twin Ports Dermatology, we have a luxurious Med Spa. This is where we do the microneedling procedures, as well as many other treatments. We use a handheld device called the SkinPen to deliver microneedling treatments.
The SkinPen has a fine tip and sterile needles that puncture the skin to trigger the body’s healing processes. This process of microneedling takes around 60 minutes to complete, depending on your skin’s needs. There may be a couple of days of downtime after your session where your skin is red and dry however, you may continue on your day right after!

At Twin Ports Dermatology, we also offer microneedling using the SkinPen with PRP for even extra healing and collagen production. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is found in your blood cells. This is the use of your own body’s cells to ramp up the healing of your skin and minimize aging symptoms.
There are two steps when microneedling with PRP. The first step is a nurse will draw a few teaspoons of blood from your arm, this then gets placed in a centrifuge to separate the blood platelets.
