PRF Hair Restoration

Restore full, healthy hair without medications or surgery

Asset 1

Thinning hair can chip away at your confidence long before it shows up in the mirror. If you’ve noticed a widening part, a receding hairline, or patches that feel less full than they used to, PRF hair restoration offers a natural way to wake up dormant follicles. At Twin Ports Dermatology, we use your body’s own healing power to help restore density without surgery, synthetic additives, or significant downtime.

How Does PRF Hair Restoration Work?

PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin, a concentrated blend of growth factors and healing cells drawn from your own blood. Unlike PRP (platelet-rich plasma), PRF spins at a lower speed, which preserves more white blood cells and creates a fibrin matrix that releases growth factors gradually over time. That slow release gives follicles sustained nourishment rather than a single quick boost.

Providers inject this concentrate directly into areas of thinning, where it:

  • Stimulates follicles that have become dormant or miniaturized
  • Improves blood flow to the scalp
  • Extends the growth phase of the hair cycle
  • Supports thicker, healthier strands over time

Because PRF comes entirely from your own body, it carries virtually no risk of allergic reaction or rejection.

Am I a Good Candidate for PRF Hair Restoration?

PRF works best for patients in the early-to-moderate stages of hair thinning who still have some active follicles to stimulate. You may be a strong candidate if you’re experiencing:

  • Genetic thinning, such as androgenetic alopecia
  • A receding hairline or a widening part
  • Post-pregnancy or stress-related shedding
  • Thinning after illness, surgery, or medication changes

PRF tends to work less effectively on scalps with long-standing bald patches, where follicles have already scarred over. During your consultation, we’ll examine your scalp, review your medical history, and talk through your goals to determine whether PRF, another treatment, or a combination approach fits you best.

BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS

*Individual results may vary.

How Long Does a Typical PRF Hair Restoration Treatment Take?

Most sessions take about 45 minutes to an hour. Many patients describe mild discomfort during the injections, but numbing options help keep the experience comfortable. For best results, we typically recommend a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, followed by periodic maintenance sessions.

What Results Will I See With PRF Hair Restoration?

Hair growth takes time, and PRF works with your body’s natural cycle rather than forcing instant change. Most patients start noticing reduced shedding within the first month, with visible improvements in thickness and density emerging around three to six months after treatment begins.

Results vary based on the extent of thinning, how many sessions you complete, and your individual biology. Many patients maintain their results with periodic touch-up sessions every six to twelve months. Pairing PRF with targeted hair supplements and serums can help enhance your results and support long-term hair restoration.

Is There Any Downtime After PRF Hair Restoration?

One of the biggest advantages of PRF is how little it disrupts your routine. Because the treatment uses your own blood and fine needles rather than incisions, downtime is minimal.

  • Mild redness, tenderness, or swelling at injection sites, usually gone within a day or two
  • No downtime is required, and most patients return to normal activities immediately
  • Avoid washing your hair for the first several hours after treatment
  • Skip strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for about 24 hours

Your provider will send you home with specific aftercare instructions tailored to your scalp and treatment plan.

  • Hydrate!  Drink at least 64 oz of water and eat a good snack before coming to prepare for the blood draw.
  • Take 2000 mg of Vitamin C daily before your treatment.  The earlier you start, the better!
  • Avoid Omega-3s, Turmeric, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, and Garlic Supplements for 7 days prior.
  • To lessen your chance of irritation & redness, pause the use of Retinol and exfoliating acids 3 days before your treatment and for 3 days after.
  • If you develop a fever, cold, or flu symptoms, or develop a cold sore, blemish, or rash, etc., in the area to be treated prior to your appointment, you must reschedule (we will not treat you).
  • If you have a special event or vacation coming up, we recommend scheduling your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance (we prefer 3-4).
  • Discontinue use of anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal) such as Aspirin, Motrin (or any other Ibuprofen drugs) at least 3 days to 1 week before your treatment. With PRF, we “want” inflammation; this is one of the mechanisms by which PRF does its work. If you are or have been on systemic use of corticosteroids (steroids) within 2 weeks of treatment, we cannot treat you. Consult your physician for approval to discontinue the use of steroids and receive treatment.
  • Discontinue use of any other blood-thinning agents such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s and DHA’s), etc. at least 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment to minimize bruising and bleeding.
  • It is recommended that you avoid alcohol, caffeine, niacin supplements, spicy foods, and cigarettes 3 days before and after your treatment. All of these may increase the risk of bruising.
  • You can return to your daily activities almost immediately.
  • Do not touch, press, rub, or manipulate the treated area (s) for at least 8 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid blood thinners and NSAIDs for 2 weeks following your treatment to minimize the risk of bruising.
  • If you experience discomfort or pain, you may take acetaminophen/Tylenol as directed.
  • You may apply ice to the injected area for 20-30 minutes after the procedure for comfort.
  • Do not wash or take a shower for at least 6 hours after your treatment.
  • Do not use any lotions, creams, or make-up for at least 6 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise and sun and heat exposure for at least 3 days after your treatment.
  • It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, soreness, and swelling that may last 3-14 days following your procedure.
  • For optimal results, follow your product recommendations from your provider.
  • Come well-hydrated and eat a snack or meal before arriving to avoid feeling lightheaded with the blood draw.
