Why Should I Get an Annual Skin Check?

Annual skin checks are important to ensure that you have healthy, cancer-free skin. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. With this being said, getting annual exams is necessary to detect precancerous and cancer cells at the earliest stage, so it is easier to treat. During these skin checks, your dermatology provider will identify any new growths, moles, and skin abnormalities that may be present.

When Should I Get Skin Checks?

Getting a skin check once a year is usually how often your dermatology provider suggests going in. However, if you are concerned about an area of your skin, it is important to go get it checked out sooner; the earlier, the better! People older than the age of 40 should start to go get annual checks, but if you have one or more of the following risk factors, it is important to start going earlier in age and possibly more frequently.

Risk factors:

  • Family history of melanoma
  • Light hair, such as blonde or red
  • Light eye color
  • Skin that easily burns in the sun
  • History of unusual moles
  • Use of tanning beds
  • 50 or more moles on the body

What is an Annual Skin Exam?

It is a head-to-toe exam that includes checking your scalp, fingernails, and toenails to ensure the health of your skin. Your dermatology provider will examine your skin to see if there are any abnormalities within your skin; when doing this, they may use a tool called a Dermatoscope to look at any moles or spots on your skin.

If a spot arises questioning, your dermatology provider also may take a biopsy of the abnormal area and send it to the lab to be tested. If there are abnormal or cancer cells present, the dermatology provider will surgically remove the area to ensure only healthy skin remains.

Preventative Skincare

After your first exam, future skin check-ups will ensure that there are no abnormal changes to your skin. The dermatology provider may take photos of the mole/affected area to compare the size for the next check-up and make sure it didn’t enlarge or change shape. During your consultation, the dermatology provider will also give you tips and suggest products that you may use to help prevent your skin from UV damage and skin cancer.
