What Does Retinol Do For Your Skin?

Looking for the most effective ingredient in any skincare regimen?

Then it’s time to add retinol to your favorite skincare product.

Maybe you remember retinol from past dermatologist visits (it’s a very popular acne treatment) or you’re starting to notice it at your favorite drugstores. Why does retinol seem to be everywhere lately?

And what does retinol do for your skin?

What is Retinol, and How Does It Work?

Retinol is a retinoid that’s derived from vitamin A, which is an essential compound for any anti-wrinkle, anti-hyperpigmentation skin product.

While other skincare products tend to remove the top layer of the skin (where dead cells and impurities are most visible), retinol goes one step further to sink beneath the top dermis, to mid-level dermal tissue. Retinol “plumps up” this skin tissue, which helps smooth away the appearance of surface-level wrinkles and fine lines.

What’s more, retinol exfoliates the skin’s surface, meaning you’ll see clearer, smoother skin in less time.

What Can Retinol Treat?

Retinol is an excellent choice for clients who want their skincare products to go a little further. Retinol can be used to treat a variety of complexion issues, including:

  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Pigmented skin
  • Oily complexion
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Large pores
  • And more

Retinol is a comprehensive skincare ingredient that can do a lot, which means adding this vitamin to your daily regimen could help unlock a younger, more radiant complexion!

Which Retinol Product is Right for Me?

Retinol products are available in a variety of strengths, meaning there are plenty of choices out there for you. Here’s a quick primer to help you make the choice for which retinol product is right for you:

  • Over-the-counter retinol products: Retinol used to only be available by prescription, but new retinol formulas mean you can get a product that contains retinol without visiting a dermatologist. Over-the-counter retinol products tend to be gentler, but you’ll still need to protect your skin with sunscreen.
  • Medical-grade retinol products: These skincare products are usually developed by dermatologists and available at dermatology practices and medical spa centers. These products are stronger, meaning you’ll get results faster.

At Twin Ports Dermatology, we have curated a line of retinol based on your age and past retinol use. Optimal Skin by Twin Ports Dermatology retinols have a sustained-release capability, which slowly delivers the active ingredients to the deeper layers of the skin to bypass the common irritation that comes from using retinol.

  • Optimal Skin Retinol 20 – Perfect for those just starting out on a retinol or those with sensitive skin.
  • Optimal Skin Retinol 50 – Most commonly used. This medium strength retinol is great for those who have tried a retinol in the past and are looking for more cell turnover to even skin tone and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, while stimulating collagen growth.
  • Optimal Skin Retinol 100 – Our maximum strength retinol is designed for mature skin and those who have been using retinol for some time and have built a tolerance for retinol.

Prescription-grade retinol products: This type of retinol product is only available by prescription. This type of product is typically used to treat acne and skin conditions by a dermatologist.
