What Causes Warts?

Usually caused by a common virus, warts often appear on the hands but can occur almost anywhere. They may make you feel self-conscious, especially when people can see them. Many people have warts at some time in their lives, and most will go away on their own, but you may not want to wait that long to see them gone.

What Causes Warts?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes warts. It promotes the overgrowth of skin cells, which gives warts their crusty, raised appearance. This contagious virus spreads easily, so many people will experience a few warts. People who bite their nails or often have cuts on their hands can have a higher risk of getting warts since this makes it easier for the virus to enter.

Not everyone who comes into contact with HPV will get warts. We all come into contact with this virus regularly. Most of the time, the immune system can eradicate the virus before it can spread. Each person’s immune system will respond to different types of HPV in unique ways. Small children can get them more often since adults have been exposed many times and have a strong immune response.

Are Warts Harmful?

Warts do not cause any harm, and for most people, they will go away in a few months, but some can take much longer. If you want to get rid of warts that make you feel self-conscious, treatment options work well and can have you free of warts.

How Are Warts Treated?

We offer a variety of methods for treating or removing warts. Common but successful methods include:

Cryotherapy

This treatment uses cold, often liquid nitrogen, to freeze the wart. The freezing temperature can kill the virus and stop the over-producing skin cells. Some warts will respond in one treatment, while larger ones might need more.

Topical medications

Medications applied to the skin can kill the HPV virus or stop it from spreading to new skin cells. They can make a wart go away much faster than without treatment.

Oral medications

Oral medications can treat the virus from inside the body, causing warts to shrink and disappear. For some people, they can get rid of even stubborn warts.

Will My Warts Come Back?

Most warts will not come back after treatment. However, sometimes treatment does not get rid of all the virus. If a wart comes back, we will re-treat it and try a different treatment if necessary until you remain wart-free.
