How to Remove Spider Veins

Spider veins affect between 30-50% of the adult population. They occur when blood pools in the veins closest to the surface of the skin, most commonly on the face, legs, or ankles. Although they can be caused by a number of factors, in many cases the exact cause is not known.  And while they are tiny in size, they can have a big effect on one’s confidence.

The good news is that they usually respond exceptionally well to an easy, in-office treatment called Sclerotherapy.

Why Do Spider Veins Develop?

Here is a list of reasons you may have developed spider veins:

  • You have a family history of spider veins. 90% of people with spider veins have a family history of them.
  • You are female. Spider veins are generally more likely to occur in women due to hormones.
  • You are getting older. The veins weaken over time, so as we age, our risk increases.
  • You are overweight. The more weight-bearing your legs do, the greater the risk of developing spider veins.
  • You are pregnant. Hormone fluctuation and the extra stress on the veins during pregnancy contribute to the likelihood that one may develop spider veins.
  • You sit or stand in one position for many hours each day.
  • You have sun damage on your face.
  • You have experienced excess pressure in the face due to coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or bearing down during childbirth.

What Treatments Are Available?

The gold standard of spider vein care is sclerotherapy injections. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical spider vein treatment that involves the injection of an FDA-approved solution directly into the spider vein via a tiny needle.

The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and then to disappear over time. This treatment is an in-office one and takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. Some patients will have larger clusters of spider veins that will need to be treated on more than one occasion to accomplish full fading of the veins. Typically, patients require a series of 1-4 treatments to clear their spider veins.
