How to Prevent Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, approximately 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. The most deadly is melanoma, but basal and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common. Regardless of the type, skin cancer is easily preventable.

CDC Recommendations to Prevent Skin Cancer

The CDC guidelines provide easy-to-follow practices to keep you safe from skin cancer. Follow these simple guidelines to protect yourself from the sun’s deadly UV rays.

  • Stay in the shade, especially between 10 am and 4 pm
  • Wear clothing that covers arms and legs
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, even in the winter
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating
  • Avoid indoor tanning, as it exposes users to intense UV ray levels known to cause skin cancer

While these are not the only way to keep your skin safe, they are the easiest methods to protect yourself from skin cancer. Be careful when around water, snow, or sand as it reflects the sun’s UV rays.

Skin Cancer Check: When to Do It?

We recommended seeing a dermatology provider once a year. It is imperative if your family has a history of skin cancer, you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer before, had sunburns, or spent time in a tanning bed (even if it has been years).

Annual checkups are helpful because they allow your dermatology provider to track your progress and catch any signs of skin cancer in its early stages. If caught early enough, skin cancer is easily treated.

How To Identify Signs of Skin Cancer

Twin Ports Dermatology recommends self-examining your skin once a month to keep track of any signs of skin cancer. Some signs of skin cancer include pimple-like lesions that won’t go away or a mole that has changed shape, size, or odd borders. If your family has had a history of skin cancer, please schedule regular checkups as it increases your likelihood of skin cancer.
