How Does a CO2 Laser Work?

Laser Skin Resurfacing is an effective way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and also to tighten skin and even skin tone

Laser skin treatments are growing in popularity because of their effectiveness and because they are completely non-invasive. There is very little downtime, if any, making them a great solution to all of your aging concerns. Let’s take a look at how one of our most popular laser treatments works.

CO2 Laser Overview

CO2 lasers are named so because they use a type of gas called carbon dioxide. Electricity is run through a gas filled tube in which the ends are mirrors. When this electricity runs through the tube, the gases (including carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and helium) are all triggered to do certain reactions that produce laser light. This light then works in specific ways to address your skin issues.

How a CO2 Laser Works

Essentially, the CO2 laser is an ablative laser, meaning it removes layers of skin in a fractionated method. This method involves removing columns of skin and heating this underlying skin, so that the healing process begins at a deeper level.

The combination of removing skin in columns and heating the deeper layers stimulates the growth of new collagen. As the epidermis heals and regrows, the skin will appear clearer and smoother.  Following your treatment regiment, your fine lines and wrinkles will be less visible, areas of hyperpigmentation will heal with new, clearer cells, and the additional collagen and elastin production will help with your tone and elasticity.

What is a CO2 Laser Treatment Like?

Each CO2RE treatment is customized to your needs; however, most patients can expect to spend 30 to 60 minutes in a CO2RE treatment session. Session length can vary due to the customization to each patient.

Is There any Downtime with CO2 Laser Skin Rejuvenation?

There’s no downtime with the CO2RE laser treatment, although you may experience some redness and mild discomfort at the treatment site during the healing process. During this time after treatment it will be important to wear a high SPF sunscreen following your treatment, because your skin will be sensitive to the sun’s UV rays.
