Winter is officially here, and that means it’s the season of dry, chapped lips. But not if you have our tips for getting rid of chapped lips handy!

5 Steps to Get Rid of Dry, Chapped Lips

 1. Drink plenty of water.

Hydration is key to maintaining beautifully smooth lips. Thanks to thin skin, your lips are often one of the first places to show signs of dehydration in the form of dry and cracking skin. We recommend drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to keep your lips looking luscious.

 2. Use a high-quality lip balm.

A good lip balm can be your best friend, as it can keep your lips moisturized even while you’re in the dryest of air. At Twin Ports Dermatology, we recommend Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm Lip Balm, a medicated, moisturizing lip balm that contains 1% hydrocortisone to treat even the most cracked and chapped lips. With Dr. Dans Lip Balm, as well as any medicated lip balm, it is wise to use it for a few weeks and then take a short break in order to give your lips a rest from the hydrocortisone.

 3. Sleep with a humidifier.

A humidifier isn’t just for when you have a cold; it can be a game-changing tool to help you avoid chapped, cracked lips. A humidifier helps prevent air from becoming too dry, which can often lead to those dreaded chapped lips. Best of all, a humidifier can help your skin look dewy, even when you’re operating on just a few hours’ sleep.

4. Exfoliate weekly.

Use a gentle lip scrub or your toothbrush to lightly exfoliate the surface of your lip skin. When you’re done, use a medicated lip balm or petroleum jelly to add moisture to your newly exfoliated lips.

5. Avoid drying lipsticks.

Lipsticks and glosses can be drying, which is why it’s important to pay attention to what you’re putting on your lips. Look for brands that have oils or promise more moisture; avoid matte lipsticks whenever possible, as these tend to be the biggest culprits for creating dry, cracked lips.
