Am I a Good Candidate for Chemical Peels?

While you may have one or two primary concerns you want to focus on, almost all of us have a wide range of facial skin concerns we would like to correct. Chemical peels are one of the most useful and versatile treatments in a skincare expert’s toolbox. Even better, you have so many choices that almost everyone can enjoy the benefits of these customizable treatments.

What are Chemical or Facial Peels?

Chemical peels or facial peels are usually composed of acids, ranging from gentler ones, such as lactic or glycolic acid, to stronger ones, like trichloroacetic acid. The deepest peels use a powerful acid called phenol. Chemical peels are applied to the skin, where they work to break apart and peel away layers of dead and damaged skin cells. By choosing the right peel, your Twin Ports Dermatology expert will achieve your desired results on a schedule that suits your lifestyle.

Am I a Good Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Many factors affect whether chemical peels are the best treatment option for your needs. Unlike lasers and other energy-based treatments, however, skin tone is not usually a concern. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You are in generally good health
  • You do not have an infection, active skin condition, or injury in the treatment area
  • You want to target many concerns with one treatment
  • You have reasonable expectations
  • You are not pregnant and do not have certain medical conditions

Because chemical peels come in such a wide range of formulas, almost anyone is a candidate. However, only a consultation can determine which of our many treatment options will provide your best results.

Chemical peels are best used in combination with our medical-grade skincare products to maintain and improve your results. Ask your skincare expert to recommend the best products for your needs.

What is Recovery Like After a Chemical Peel?

Recovery after chemical peels depends on how deeply the peel works. Light peels typically have no downtime, with any mild redness fading in less than a day. Medium peels often result in a few days of redness, sensitivity, and sometimes peeling or flaking. Deep or phenol peels may require up to a few weeks of recovery with significant peeling and crusting, but these peels have the most dramatic results.

How Often Should I Get a Chemical Peel?

Your Twin Ports Dermatology expert will help you develop a schedule for your chemical peels that suits your skin and schedule. Light peels usually require a series of treatments to see results, and you can have one as often as every few weeks.

Medium peels typically require three to five sessions for maximum results, although this varies widely. You can usually have one every few months. Deep peels are so powerful that most people will only have a single treatment. We will help you balance the number of treatments with the effect on your schedule to determine your best options.
